The Flower Queen and the Butterfly
By Oscar S. Cisneros [ Download in MP3 ]

Once in a garden a love story took place
T'was between two lovers, both of different face.
In fact it could be said that they weren't each other's type
For one was a spider and the other a butterfly.

She was strong and yellow and lived inside a rose.
He had dainty wings and an antenna for a nose.
A spider with eight legs, a butterfly with six;
Both liked to hide using nature's color tricks.

With purple black wings and skin colored gold
This prissy butterfly had looks that were bold.
But its valor was not brawn, t'was freedom's gift of flight:
Graceful and fluttering, only air was as light.

Our spider wove no web but with her arms could catch
Gentle little bugs - anything she could snatch.
But though she was violent and bared wicked teeth
Her color was as brilliant as the rose beneath her feet.

So one day our butterfly sought to rest its wings
As the Flower Queen waited, spreading her limbs.
He looked for pollen and some sweet nectar
While she looked for him, like any other spider.

But through scented petals, they both spied in fright
For never had they seen such beauty in plain sight:
She saw his sweetness and gentle delicacy
And he saw her strength and elegant trickery.

Slowly his wings pumped under the sun
While she circled 'round - a dance had begun.
How strange this seduction between predator and prey;
Two creatures of beauty fell in love that day.

But alas such passion defies nature's intent
And hunger eats feeling with an evil bent.
Which of these two lived for another day
Is not for this poet to reveal to you today.
It should be enough for us to ask why,
Love sprung between a spider and a butterfly.
